How to do grad school applications abroad (humanities & social sciences edition)

Education, Information
Putting down some thoughts on how to approach PhD applications to Global North universities from my own experiences of doing applications in the Fall 2020 cycle (a tough year!). I’ll be starting grad school in Fall 2021, and a lot of friends and peers have already asked for advice since they plan to apply in the coming cycle. So I thought of collating a guide. Feel free to shoot questions or amendments after reading this. This is a broad primer for humanities and social science scholars. Which means that, disclaimer: this advice is not 100% foolproof and there are local, context-specific variations you have to account for. But I will try to walk you through some of the basics of the application cycle, from its early prep phase to its culmination in a decision. Find 5+ Fully Funded Graduate Programs

Education, Information, Scholarships
For those of you planning to apply to graduate school this year or next, I'm writing today to emphasize an important piece of advice. I encourage you to apply to at least 5 graduate programs at once. Here's why! First, this approach will provide you a greater chance of success in getting into at least one, but possibly 2 or more, programs that offer you full funding. Having several offers on the table gives you more negotiating power for a greater funding package and also acceptance off waitlists.  Also, it's important not to put all your eggs in one basket. This is because many factors can change over the course of the year after you apply -  factors that will be out of your control - like pandemics, cuts to program funding, the need to diversify…

International dual and joint degrees to get green light

Education, Information
India is set to greenlight dual and joint degrees awarded by Indian universities with international partners as part of its internationalisation plan being pushed through forcefully since its inclusion last year in the National Education Policy (NEP), a blueprint for the next decade. Foreign universities had already started to explore such opportunities, while noting the challenges of setting up joint or dual degrees. India’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman flagged up the change in her budget speech on 1 February, saying: “To promote enhanced academic collaboration with foreign higher educational institutions, it is proposed to put in place a regulatory mechanism to permit dual degrees, joint degrees, twinning arrangements and other such mechanisms.” This has opened the door to universities overseas looking for Indian partnerships. “It was spoken about in the budget…

How to Build a Great Relationship with a Mentor

How to Build a Great Relationship with a Mentor

Information
The research is clear: People with mentors perform better, advance in their careers faster, and even experience more work-life satisfaction. But many people don't know how to find a mentor or establish a relationship. Summary:   While 76% of working professionals believe that a mentor is important to growth, more than 54% do not have such a relationship. If you’re one of these people, there are a few things you can do to find a mentor and build a strong relationship: define your goals and specific needs; write a “job description” for your ideal mentor; search for mentors through your second-degree network; make the ask (and keep it simple); have a first meeting; create a mentorship agreement; and follow up to say thank you over the long term. The research on the power…
