For those of you planning to apply to graduate school this year or next, I’m writing today to emphasize an important piece of advice. I encourage you to apply to at least 5 graduate programs at once.
Here’s why!
First, this approach will provide you a greater chance of success in getting into at least one, but possibly 2 or more, programs that offer you full funding. Having several offers on the table gives you more negotiating power for a greater funding package and also acceptance off waitlists.
Also, it’s important not to put all your eggs in one basket. This is because many factors can change over the course of the year after you apply – factors that will be out of your control – like pandemics, cuts to program funding, the need to diversify cohorts by gender and race, and resignation or sabbaticals of the faculty that you were in contact with.
Finally, you are putting in a lot of work for one application, including the development of a personal statement and recommendation letter requests. Why not leverage that work into 5 applications to increase your chances?
Next Thursday, I am giving a FREE public workshop: Find 5+ Fully Funded Graduate Programs to Achieve Your Career Goals
If you plan to apply to master’s and doctoral programs this year or next, I encourage you to join and get live instruction from me on how to start your search for fully funded graduate programs in your discipine.
FREE Workshop
Find 5+ Fully Funded Graduate Programs to Achieve Your Career Goals
Date: Thursday, May 20
Time: 11am PT | 2pm ET
1.5 hour online workshop with ProFellow Founder, Dr. Vicki Johnson
All recipients will receive a FREE graduate school workbook to document the fully funded programs you find during the workshop!
Please register here to join live or receive the replay.
In this 1.5 hour workshop, you will learn:
- Why some graduate programs are “fully funded”, meaning they provide full tuition scholarships and annual stipends to ALL or most accepted students
- How to find fully funded master’s and doctoral programs in the U.S., Canada, Europe and Australasia using my online research strategies
- Examples of leading universities that pay their students to attend
- How to find your ideal PhD supervisor through these same steps
- Why acceptance to fully funded programs can help you negotiate funding at non-funded programs
Please note: This event will not help you find fully funded online programs – because they do not exist! Online programs serve as a source of revenue for universities. If you are considering an online graduate program because you cannot relocate for school, I encourage you to attend this free event to learn how to find fully funded full-time, on-campus programs in your local area.
Please register here to join live or receive the replay.
I hope you’ll join this event! This is a great way to kick off your applications this summer.
Warm regards,
Vicki
