Apply to be a part of the East-West Center graduate student community in Honolulu, Hawai’i.

We are pleased to announce the following opportunities for study and scholarships at the East-West Center (EWC) starting in August 2022. For more than sixty years, East-West Center students have developed lifelong relationships and a powerful sense of community with others who share a commitment to the US-Indo-Pacific region. This fall semester, we safely welcomed 130 people from around the world, who join a diverse and dynamic community of 250 graduate students from 40+ countries, Hawai‘i, and from across the United States to participate in the East-West Center’s residential and extra-curricular programs while pursuing graduate degrees at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. We hope you will be among the next cohort of leaders and scholars to join us!

East-West Center 
Graduate Degree Fellowship

Overview:  Funding for graduate students with a commitment to the Asia Pacific region to pursue a graduate degree at the University of Hawai‘i and participate in the East-West Center’s residential, educational and leadership development programs.
Type of study:  Master’s or Doctoral degree study (up to 24-month fellowship)
Eligibility:  Citizens or permanent residents of the United States and citizens of countries in the Pacific and Asia, including Russia.
Application deadline:  December 1

U.S. South Pacific 
Scholarship Program
EastWestCenter.org/USSP

Overview:  USSP provides educational opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students from South Pacific Island nations in fields of study meeting regional development needs. Funded by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State.
Type of study:  Bachelor’s degree study at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo; or Master’s degree study at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.
Eligibility:  Citizens from the Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu.
Application deadline:  February 1

Obuchi Student Scholarship

Overview:  Funding for graduate students with a commitment to the Asia Pacific region to pursue a graduate degree at the University of Hawai‘i and participate in the East-West Center’s residential, educational and leadership development programs.
Type of study:  Master’s or Doctoral degree study (up to 24-month fellowship); or Asia Pacific Leadership Program (4.5-month fellowship)
Eligibility:  Residents of Okinawa, Japan
Application deadline:  December 1

Overview:  A unique opportunity for University of Hawai‘i graduate students with external or self-funding to participate in the East-West Center’s residential, educational, leadership development and cultural programs.
Eligibility:  Full-time graduate student status at the University of Hawai‘i, or participation in a UH graduate exchange program; students from all countries that have a demonstrated commitment to the Asia Pacific region.
Application deadlines:  November 1 for spring semester start; May 15 for fall semester start.

The East-West Center promotes better relations and understanding among the people and nations of the United States, Asia, and the Pacific through cooperative study, research, and dialogue. Established by the U.S. Congress in 1960, the Center serves as a resource for information and analysis on critical issues of common concern, bringing people together to exchange views, build expertise, and develop policy options. The Center is an independent, public, nonprofit organization with funding from the U.S. government, and additional support provided by private agencies, individuals, foundations, corporations, and governments in the region.
